To the Gates

November 6 - November 30, 2025 @ Galatea Fine Art

This exhibition is dedicated to the gates in my hometown, Sakwo, and
the memories of my childhood.

In Sakwo, an ancient Newar town of Kathmandu Valley, eight gates were
erected as pathways to the community. Five have survived. These gates
are decorated with images of deities and symbols believed to offer blessings
and protection. They are integral to the community. Each gate serves
a specific role: welcoming a new bride to the community, bidding farewell
to a daughter after her wedding, guiding a funeral procession, bringing
the Goddess, Bajrayogini’s chariot, and leading the faithful towards
the Swasthani temple.

These gates form a living map of rituals, beliefs, and rhythms of
people in this community.
